About Baleària
Baleària is a Spanish ferry operator based in Dénia on the Costa Blanca, founded in 1998 and led by Adolfo Utor. It grew on the routes between the mainland and the Balearic Islands, later adding the Strait of Gibraltar, North Africa and the Caribbean. In August 2025 the company agreed to take over Armas Trasmediterránea, and since May 2026 it has run its Canary Islands business under the Baleària Canarias brand. By its own figures, the group now has around 4,500 employees, more than 50 ships and carries over eight million passengers a year; Baleària has announced investment in comfort and digitalisation for the ships it took over.
Baleària Canarias: what has changed
For you, mainly the name on the ticket changes. Booking, your customer account and check-in rules now run through Baleària, while the Armas Trasmediterránea brand remains visible during a transition period. The routes and most of the ships have stayed the same; timetables, the operator says, still vary by route, date and season. Fleet in the Canary Islands
The backbone is the Volcán-class vehicle ferries and their sister ships: Volcán de Taidía, Volcán de Tagoro and Mercedes Pinto between Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas and Morro Jable, Volcán de Tirajana and Pepita Castellví on the western islands, Volcán de Tindaya across the Bocaina strait, Sicilia and Volcán de Tamadaba on the long routes to Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario, Volcán de Tinamar on the mainland route from Cádiz, plus the Ciudad de Valencia between the two capitals, Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario. All are vehicle ferries, and the larger ships have cabins, a cafeteria or restaurant, and outdoor decks.
Routes in the Canary Islands
Baleària Canarias covers almost every relation in the archipelago: Tenerife - Gran Canaria direct to Las Palmas in 100 minutes, Tenerife - La Gomera and Tenerife - La Palma, Tenerife - Fuerteventura to Morro Jable, Gran Canaria - Fuerteventura to Morro Jable and, on the overnight ferry, to Puerto del Rosario, and Lanzarote - Fuerteventura across the Bocaina in 35 minutes. The long routes sail overnight: Gran Canaria - Lanzarote in a good six hours, Tenerife - Lanzarote in around ten hours, plus the direct ferry Gran Canaria - La Palma. With cabins and a large vehicle deck, these are the first choice for motorhomes and travellers with a lot of luggage.
From the mainland via Cádiz
The Volcán de Tinamar sails once or twice a week from Cádiz on a round trip calling at up to five islands: Arrecife, Puerto del Rosario, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Santa Cruz de La Palma. Check-in, vehicles and pets
On the Canary Islands routes: 60 minutes before departure at the terminal without a vehicle, 90 minutes with one; in Cádiz the desks open at least two hours before departure. All ferries carry cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles; a rental car needs the hire company's consent. You register pets when booking and choose, depending on the ship, between a Pet&You mat next to your seat, a kennel on deck, or a pet-friendly cabin. Fares and booking
Tickets are available online, in the app and at the port desks. Canary Islands residents get the state discount, regular customers collect points in the Baleària Club, and a fare with free cancellation takes the risk out of planning; cabins are booked as an add-on.
