La Gomera has one ferry port with outside connections, San Sebastián de La Gomera, and two small jetties on the south coast, Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey, served by a coastal route run by Fred Olsen Express. The way onto the island almost always goes via Los Cristianos on Tenerife.

Tenerife from Los Cristianos

The 50-minute crossing from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián is the most sought-after ferry route in the Canary Islands. Fred Olsen Express sails three times a day with Benchijigua Express, Bencomo Express or Barlovento Express, Baleària Canarias four times with Pepita Castellví or Volcán de Tirajana. Both carry vehicles, both run all year round. The first ferry in the morning and the last in the evening make a day trip from Tenerife possible; if you're travelling by car, book ahead in peak season. Check-in, ships and arrival in detail: Ferry Tenerife - La Gomera.

Los Cristianos is around 20 minutes from Tenerife South Airport. If you're crossing straight after landing, allow time for luggage, taxi or bus and check-in: with Baleària Canarias that's 60 minutes before departure without a vehicle and 90 minutes with one; Fred Olsen Express states the boarding time on your boarding pass.

La Palma from San Sebastián

Both ferry companies continue on from San Sebastián to Santa Cruz de La Palma, around four hours, two departures a day each. Most of these sailings start in Los Cristianos and only call briefly at La Gomera; you stay on board for the onward journey. Details on Ferry La Palma - La Gomera.

The coastal route to Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey

Fred Olsen Express connects the three south-coast ports with the Benchi Express: San Sebastián to Playa Santiago in around 30 minutes, on to Valle Gran Rey in 70 minutes total, twice a day in each direction. The ferry replaces the winding drive across the island and is the most convenient way into the Valle Gran Rey for travellers without a car. Vehicles aren't carried, but bicycles are.

Taking your car on the ferry

On the Los Cristianos - San Sebastián route, both ferry companies carry vehicles, from motorbikes to motorhomes. The special case is a rental car: many rental firms on Tenerife rule out taking it to another island, so check your rental agreement before booking. Without your own vehicle, you're not stuck on La Gomera: the port in San Sebastián has rental car desks, taxis and the island buses, and the coastal ferry takes you south.
