Fred Olsen Express requires 20 minutes before departure on foot and 40 minutes with a vehicle, Baleària Canarias 60 minutes on foot and 90 minutes with a vehicle; in Cádiz the Baleària desks open at least two hours before departure, in Huelva the Fred Olsen desk three hours before. Only with the rental firm's permission. Baleària Canarias requires you to clear this with the rental company before booking, as some rental firms don't allow it. Without permission, you drop the car off at the port and hire a new one on the next island; more in the guide Island Hopping.

With a vehicle, on the overnight ferries, and on Tenerife - El Hierro with its one daily departure, yes. As a foot passenger on busy routes like Lanzarote - Fuerteventura or Tenerife - La Gomera, you can usually get a ticket at the port on the day too.
